Answers to the questions we hear most from creators using AskMyGenie. If yours isn’t here, email genie@askmygenie.ai — during the beta, questions usually get answered the same day, and the good ones end up on this page.
Getting started
What is AskMyGenie?
AskMyGenie organizes the money side of being a creator. You import your bank and credit-card activity, Genie categorizes each transaction onto the right Schedule C line with your line of work in mind, and at tax time you export a worksheet you can hand to your accountant — or use yourself. It prepares your numbers; it does not file your return.
How do I get my transactions in?
Upload a bank or credit-card statement — PDF or CSV — on the web dashboard or from the app. Genie reads the transactions out of the document. You don’t connect your bank account or share your banking login.
Do I need an invite?
AskMyGenie is in a limited beta. When open spots are available you can sign up directly with your email — no code, no invite. When they’re full, join the waitlist on the homepage (or email genie@askmygenie.ai) and we’ll let you in as capacity grows.
How categorization works
How does Genie decide what’s deductible?
Genie reads each transaction knowing what you do for a living. A cast iron skillet is production equipment for a food creator and probably personal for a gaming streamer — the deductions that matter most are the ones that depend on knowing what you do. Each business expense is assigned a Schedule C line, with the reasoning and a confidence level shown on the transaction.
What does the yellow “Review” badge mean?
It means Genie wasn’t sure and is asking instead of guessing. Some purchases genuinely depend on facts only you know — whether that skillet was for recipe videos or Sunday dinner. Open the transaction and decide; it takes a couple of taps.
What if Genie gets one wrong?
Open the transaction and change the category. The row will then read “Your edit” with the category you chose. Your decisions are permanent: Genie never overwrites a category a person set, even when it re-runs its own categorizations.
What does “Your rule” mean?
While you’re correcting a category, Genie offers to remember the decision for that merchant — a switch in the same dialog, off unless you flip it. From then on, new transactions from that merchant are categorized by your rule, skip the AI entirely, and are marked “Your rule” in the list.
I changed professions. Are my old categorizations wrong now?
Maybe some — a purchase that was production spend in your old line of work can be personal in the new one. After you change your profession in settings, Genie offers to re-run its own past categorizations under the new one. It’s optional, you see the scope before it runs, and anything you edited or taught as a rule is preserved untouched.
Receipts
Why is Genie asking me to add receipts?
The IRS expects documentation behind deductions, so Genie flags deductions you’ve confirmed that are over $75 and don’t have a receipt attached yet. Snap a photo when you get one; the Inbox keeps a queue of the transactions still waiting.
How do receipts get matched to transactions?
Genie reads the receipt — merchant, date, total, line items — and suggests the imported transaction it belongs to. You confirm the match. A cash purchase with no card transaction behind it can be counted on its own.
My receipt mixes business and personal items. Now what?
Mark each line item business or personal on the receipt — groceries for recipe testing on the same slip as the family’s milk. Only the business share counts toward your deductions, item by item, not the whole total.
Your numbers and taxes
What are the “Line 24a”-style badges?
Those are Schedule C line numbers — the actual lines on the IRS form where each expense lands. Line 18 is office expense, Line 24a is travel, and so on. Genie shows the line next to the plain-English category so your accountant sees exactly where every dollar goes.
Does AskMyGenie file my taxes?
No. AskMyGenie prepares your Schedule C numbers: a worksheet PDF and CSV exports your accountant can work from directly. It doesn’t file returns and doesn’t give individualized tax advice — for guidance about your situation, talk to a CPA or tax professional.
Does it work outside the United States?
Not yet. AskMyGenie currently supports US dollars and the US Schedule C (Form 1040). Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs are the fit today.
Account and data
How does sign-in work? I never set a password.
Right — there isn’t one. You sign in with a one-time link sent to your email, so there’s no password to reuse, forget, or leak.
Who can see my financial data?
Your data is yours: it’s used to categorize your expenses and build your Schedule C, not sold or shared for advertising. The specifics — what we collect, who processes it, and the choices you have — are laid out plainly in our Privacy Policy.
